Appendix I: Aircraft Accident

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to establish the procedures to be followed by the student body, faculty, and staff in the event an aircraft crashes onto or near the campus. Following this plan will minimize loss of life and damage to surrounding property.

Priorities

Embry Riddle Aeronautical University first priority is to each person's safety. In the event an aircraft crashes onto the campus, the Universities priority is to protect against collateral damage, be it persons or property.

Expectations for Employees and Students

In the event of an aircraft crash onto the campus, call Campus Safety at 386-226-SAFE (7233) Daytona; 928-777-3728 Prescott. Your Campus Safety department will notify the appropriate agencies.

Communications

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will communicate with the campus community by the any of the following means if the situation warrants:

  • CodeRED
  • Siren
  • Emails
  • Campus Radio (WIKD Emergency Alert System)
  • Campus website
  • Campus TV
  • Verbal instructions

Responsibility and Control

The Incident Command System will be used as directed by the National Incident Management System.

The university will also assemble the U-EOT to make university related decisions.

The ERAU Campus Safety will operate an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) located in the University Safety Office located in B 518. In the event that this area becomes unusable the Campus Safety Office on the 2nd floor of the University Center will become the secondary EOC.

The Incident Commander or a designee may be represented in the Volusia County EOC and/or will be in continuous communications with the ERAU EOC.

Emergency and Training Plans

In the event an aircraft crashes onto the campus take the following actions:

  1. Immediately call 911. Inform the dispatcher of:
    1. The location of the crash
    2. The quickest route to the crash
    3. The type of aircraft, if known.
      1. If not known, describe it. Is the plane large or small?
      2. How many engines does it have?
  2. Instruct someone else to call Campus Safety & Securityat 386-226-SAFE (7233) Daytona; 928-777-3728 Prescott.
  3. Check for movement or life in the plane, if safe.
  4. If flames are visible, inform the dispatcher.
  5. Until the authorities arrive, attempt to establish a perimeter.
    1. Try to keep people away from the plane, and if there is debris, try to leave it in its position.
  6. Follow the direction of emergency responders.
