Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to establish the procedures to be followed by the student body, faculty, and staff in the event someone on our campus is threatening to harm themselves or others, or is substantially out of touch with reality. Implementation of these procedures whenever necessary will mitigate a potentially life-threatening situation.

Priorities

Embry Riddle Aeronautical University first priority is to each person's safety. In the event a member of our campus community requires psychological assistance, the University is committed to bringing the best care possible, as quickly as possible to the affected person or persons.

A psychological crisis exists when an individual is threatening to harm themselves or others, or is substantially out of touch with reality. Uncontrollable behavior and/or hallucinations could be manifested.

Expectations for Employees and Students

In the event of a psychological emergency on campus, immediately call Campus Safety at 386-226-SAFE (7233) Daytona; 928-777-3728 Prescott. Your Campus Safety department will then dispatch the appropriate personnel (Campus Safety Officers and MED Club personnel, and EVAC Ambulance).In the event of a Psychological Emergency, Campus Safety should be notified, as well as the counseling center. The Counseling Center can be reached at 226-6035.

Communications

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will communicate with the campus community by the most appropriate of the following means if the situation warrants:

  • CodeRED
  • Siren
  • Emails
  • Campus Radio (WIKD Emergency Alert System)
  • Campus website
  • Campus TV
  • Verbal instructions

Responsibility and Control

The Incident Command System will be used as directed by the National Incident Management System.

It is the responsibility of Campus Safety Officers to secure the area around the emergency and to guide outside agencies to the emergencies location on campus. MED Club personnel will be responsible for patient care until patient handoff occurs with responding agencies (Normally EVAC Ambulance). If applicable, the Counseling Center shall provide service to the victim.

Emergency and Training Plans

RESPONSE

If a psychological crisis occurs:

  1. Remain calm. Do not attempt to handle a dangerous situation. Evacuate immediate area if needed.
  2. Notify Campus Safety at 386-226-7233 (SAFE). Call 911 if immediate threat to safety. Provide the following information:
    1. Your name.
    2. Precise location.
    3. Observed symptoms of behavior.
    4. Individual's name, if known.
    5. Until help arrives, be pleasant, considerate, and understanding to avoid aggravating the situation.
  3. Do not argue with the individual. Try to determine and recognize the individual's point of view. Do not confront / detain the individual.
  4. Have someone meet Campus Safety or police at the entrance to the building and provide up to date information. Campus Safety will provide direction from that point forward. The Counseling Center will be called at 386-226-6035 for assistance as needed.
